The development of the tanning industry

The tanning industry has developed significantly over the years, with notable changes in terms of processing techniques, sustainability and market tendencies.

The use of technology, together with the introduction of machines and automated processes, has increased production efficiency and increased the quality of the end product. Technologies such as chrome tanning, vegetable tanning, and chrome-free tanning, have made it possible to obtain leathers with specific characteristics and which last longer.

The tanning industry has faced difficult environmental challenges. In these past few years, however, greater attention is being given to sustainability. Sector companies are implementing more ecological tanning methods, reducing the use of dangerous chemical substances, and implementing more efficient waste and water management practices. To face current and future challenges, the circular production models are answering recovery and recycling needs by creating an ecosystem that begins and ends with natural materials.

Consumers have, in addition, become more knowledgeable about their purchase choices, therefore tanneries have been paying more attention to transparency and the traceability of their own production chains, implementing certification systems and sustainability standards to demonstrate the ethical and sustainable origin of their leather.

Collaborations with designers and creative people to develop innovative applications are part of the development. In addition to the traditional production of leather for footwear, bags and clothing, sectors such as furnishings, automotive, aviation and the sports industry have become part of the tanning world.

Transparency, innovation and sustainability are now central elements in the development of this sector.
